about

In my own words...

In 1991 I moved to NYC to try to make it as an artist, home of the legendary NY School of Abstract Expressionists. I ended up forming a jazz band with a few close friends. This song takes visuals from Alphabet City and Harlem to set the stage for a story of young lovers. In NYC, money may be king, but the underground has always worshiped youth and beauty.

The city was far less tame and more affordable. My people were the countless artists from small towns all over the US who followed their dreams to NYC. We banded together and shared rent in the city's underbelly. The twin towers still stood, it was a time in my life that shaped everything that came later. Broke kids can often be rich in love.

We should all be so lucky to be in our 20s, hungry, and broke...

Trust me.

Nod to the Musicians...

This single release is a doozy, so I'll waste no time and dive right in. A few years back new songs were coming as fast as I could write them down. This is one of the last additions to a 10 song album I was putting together, around the time I was fortunate enough to jam with Marco Savoia. He's hands down one of the best bassists in San Diego. You'll recognize Marco from all the kick-ass local bands he's in (Shane Hall, Pink Eye to name a few). He also played on Motor Kine, which I released earlier in 2021.

The first time I played with him, he sported an upright double bass, and I played my National Resonator. He drove the song so hard I thought he was going to kick his boot through the stage floor. Before Marco, my arrangements were guitars, keyboards, drums, and harmonicas. Don't believe me? Look no further than my first album. The local legend, Lee Knight who mixed To Love a Wild Fire, contributed bass tracks on those songs.

Working with Marco is a joy, it's only fitting that the last single I release in 2021 comes from the sessions we recorded together. Marco's virtuosity affected me so much, in the Sessions EP I'm releasing to complement this single I stepped up and played the bass parts.

The single version of So Lucky is a sneak peek into what's coming in 2022.

LYRICS:

I got an ache, I got a feeling,
Want to meet in the street tomorrow
Had ENOUGH, being Locked up inside today
Let the golden sun, shine down, cast our shadows
You want anything, babe, you can have your way

And as we wade into the evening
City lights are gonna shine
Choose to use a little hustle
Let the city do our bidding tonight

Come what may
Nothing to lose, but to choose, do or die, win or lose
No Excuse, hearts to good use
What if all hell breaks loose
We should be so lucky
Oh my babe, yeah my baby
She get me HIGH, my baby get me high

I need a new change of clothes
Hit the curb real close by the drug slinging rouges
Packing so much heat, no need to die today
Hope to make some time, hop off the subway line
Walking east to west, up from 125th
When I see you, pretty babe, gonna make my day

As we wade into the evening
City lights are gonna shine
We could choose to use a little hustle
Let the city do our bidding tonight

Come what may
Nothing to lose, but to choose, do or die, win or lose
No Excuse, hearts to good use
What if all hell breaks loose
Oh, babe, We should be so lucky
Aww man so LUCKY
Oh my babe, yeah my little babe
You get me get me HIGH. Yeah
You get me get me HIGH. All day, all night
You get me get me HIGH
3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street
3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street

Woah yeah

Yeah my babe, Oh my babe
My baby get me HIGH, Aww yeah
My baby get me high, yeah

I got an ache, I got a feeling, won't leave the bed till tomorrow
I got my love right here in our birthday suits today
Let the golden sun, shine down, cast our shadows
You want anything, babe, you can have your way

And as we wade into the evening
City lights are gonna shine
Choose to use a little hustle
Let the city do our bidding tonight

Come what may
Nothing to lose, but to choose, do or die, win or lose
No Excuse, hearts to good use
What if all hell breaks loose
We should be so lucky
My babe, my babe, she get me high, yeah
She get me HIGH yeah
She get me HIGH yeah, yeah
She get me HIGH

Got to find my lover on 3rd street, 3rd street
3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street
3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street, 3rd street
3rd street, 3rd street
Get me HIGH yeah
